Baking Schmaking!

I love the idea of baking...

...and then I actually go and bake something...

...and I instantly remember why I hate the reality of baking!

I tried baking a lemon and blueberry cake inspired by our last trip and my favorite cake at Podunk. I knew right away that the batter was too thick, but since I was following a recipe - and I'm not a baker, I went against my better judgment and ignored the tell tale signs. Lo and behold, instead of a light fluffy cake... I made a dense, flour-tasting heap of mess.

I'm so mad... I just wasted a perfect pint of blueberries!!!!

I HATE BAKING.

You could make some lemon curd and save it. or break it up into some fruit sorbet to soften the dense cake.

I love baking. I like it because there aren't any timing issues. You don't have to eat baked treats right away when they are hot, and the deliciousness lasts several days and freezes well.

My non-scientific opinion is that tried and true traditional cookbooks (Betty Crocker, Better Homes and Gardens) have easier, better, and more delicious cookie, cake, and quick bread recipes than fancy gourmet cookbooks.

Gah! I hate baking too! Why is it that I cook well, and when it comes to baking, I'm a complete 'tard!

I dont even try anymore. The extent of baking I do is a box brownie mix.

For reals.

Susie/Kimmie....

Susie, I think you may be right... I actually bought an old Betty Crocker cookbook from a street fair last year. If I ever get over my fear of baking, I'll definitely give one of those recipes a try. Thanks!

Kimmie, I know why we're both 'tards when it comes to baking. It's because we're Libras and during cooking we can always decide to add a little bit more of this or a little bit more than that... it's not the end of the world and usually there's a chance to change our minds all the way up until it reaches our mouths. Now in baking-schmaking, we're pretty much stuck with what we decided 30-40 minutes ago, no second chances!!

Well, at least that's my theory for the day :)

I guess we're opposites. cooking is a chore for me...or is it trying to figure out what to cook and please the lil people in the house...but I luv to bake...may I have the recipe for that blueberry thing.

Gah! Brownies are about the simplist thing ever to bake. Box brownie mix just makes me sad. The thing with baking is that you have to follow the measurements exactly, taking special care to keep the flour loose and not compressed into the measuring cup. I like recipes and precise instructions, so baking is really my thing.

I wish I was as experimental as you are with my dinners. Your food always looks delicious!

I HATE BAKING TOO. It always goes wrong for me. I like dabbling with recipes too much ("I wonder what would happen if I added X...?") and baking is more like chemistry than art.

I feel your pain! :)
