Last Night's Dinner #91: World War II Classic

Last night's dinner was inspired by Bourdain's No Reservation Hawaii episode. My mom used to make this (and canned cornedbeef) all the time when she didn't have time to cook. I haven't had SPAM in lord knows how long and I suddenly had the biggest craving. + Hillsy has never tried it cooked - apparently his mom used to make SPAM sandwiches straight from the can!

I decided to make it three ways - plain, egg-dipped and sugar glazed (my personal fave).

A dish that's low in presentation but high on taste =)

You can't see it on the picture, but I'm soooo Filipino - wish you could see the amount of ketchup that went alongside this!!

yummm!!!! i've actually never had it egg-dipped OR sugar-dipped. i'm afraid to try...i might get addicted. i think you would be going over-board filipino if you used Jufran instead of ketchup :-)

Cornbeef - oooh i'm gonna have to make that one day! Jufran - nice! Haven't had that in decades, I think you'll have to hook me up with that one =)

Oh, it's been ages since I had Spam! I love it pan-fried so that it's crispy outside. mmmm. I have even had Teriyaki Spam Sushi believe it or not--in Hawaii while I was on vacation. It was weird but good! Cool blog!

Teriyaki Spam Sushi? I think that's what Bourdain was eating on that show. I'm actually thinking about taking a sushi class, so I'll definitely give that one a try if it pans out ;-)

Thank you, thank you, thank you for posting this. I'm Vietnamese, and my family always eats SPAM. I have to agree that it's low in quality (I mean, what is it exactly?), but it has such a great taste. I haven't tried it sugar-dipped, but I might have to...

I am really enjoying your blog.

Hi Cecilia, I'm glad someone else out there appreciates the low-grade goodness of SPAM =)

I don't even want to know what it is exactly!

I'm so happy to hear you're enjoying the site!
