Emma's (almost) Halloween Costume

Emma's (almost) Halloween costume

I was sooo excited when I finally finished Emma's costume the other night, but what I didn't count on was her reaction...Totally freaked out by the feathers, to the point where she was holding her breath and flailing uncontrollably. I guess the apple didn't fall too far from the tree. For those of you who don't know, I'm terrified of birds and lots of other animals :)

I plucked off the feathers this morning, she'll be going as a featherless chick with a cute pink comb and pink leggings.

Butterfly Cakes

butterfly cakes

I've been meaning to post pics of my MIL's yummy Butterfly Cakes. They were Hillsy's favorite when he was little so he sweet talked her into whipping some up on their last visit. Aren't they the cutest things?

I've been busy making the bean's Halloween costume, I finally finished it last night... tried it on her this morning and quickly found at that I need to start working on Plan B. Let's just say she freaked out when I put the onesie covered with white feathers on her (she WAS going to be a chick).

I finally got around to starting Emma's costume for Sunday! I used this as inspiration. All the pieces are cut I just have to glue everything together and OH I still have to make her eye mask but that shouldn't take so long. I'll be sure to take some pics and post the finished product on my model :)

Weekend Fun

firstfamilypic
We had such a great weekend... Hillsy worked from home on Friday so it felt a little longer than usual!! We went pumpkin picking on Saturday and had lots of fun taking our first official family pic and eating lots of apple cider donuts! OK let's get this Monday over with shall we? I really have to start crackin' on Emma's Halloween costume - I wanted to make a simpler version of this.

Boo!

Aren't these the cutest??? One of my close friends, Karen made these for Halloween.

I can't believe we've been here for one entire month... so let's see, what have we done so far:

- removed 4 trees in the front, planted 2 fruit trees in the back
- planted new shrubs/plants in the front
- removed kitchen wallpaper
- painted kitchen walls a yummy yellow
- almost done with kitchen cabinets (argh)
- bought a bunch of furniture to refurbish
- bed (check) couch (check) coffee table (check)
- oops almost forgot, living room area rug (check)

I'm working on the house all weekend and all of next week, so hopefully I can add to this list!

Handmade Calendar Update

Woohooo... two more months of the handmade calendar completed!!

One last post for the day - today is a "workshop" day, so I'm banning my laptop and I'll be concentrating on my current craft projects. I'll be working on May today - focusing on Mother's Day. My favorite part is coming up with the design for each month.

October: Halloween

Believe it or not, it was the "assistant to the crafter" ;-) who came up with the idea of adding the white wool cob-web trail strands for October - great idea Hillsy!

June: First day of Summer

Parts of June mysteriously vanished. I had a faux-blanket and tiny sunglasses made out of black felt by the umbrella. Unfortunately I didn't have a chance to sew it down yet and they probably blew off while I was cleaning up! I might add some details like that once I'm done with all of the months.

Have a nice day everybody!

Happy Halloween

These are Funkins (fake pumpkins). The entire Martha audience received a $40 gift certificate - so I chose the pack of 3 mini pumpkins and 3 tea lights (also fake).

UPDATE:
Karen just sent me a pic of her adorable funkin...

Last Night's Dinner #50: Chocolate Crostatas with Marmalade

I was catching up on my favorite FoodTV shows this weekend and just had to try this Giada recipe - Chocolate Crostata with Marmalade, topped with chocolate covered candied orange peel! The black and orange motif makes this a perfect Halloween treat!

If you love chocolate covered orange rinds then this is the perfect dessert for you. It's not too sweet and definitely full of flavor - the deep dark cocoa and the faint bitterness of the orange marmalade, a classic combination. I made a few alterations to the original recipe - I added a splash of Cointreau to the simple syrup (candied peels) to give it extra punch and drizzled extra chocolate all over the top to add a little more sweetness.

Chocolate Crostatas with Marmalade
Difficulty: Medium
Prep Time: 30 minutes
Inactive Prep Time: 45 minutes
Cook Time: 18 minutes

You'll need:
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1/3 cup sugar
1 tablespoon grated orange peel
1/2 teaspoon salt
10 tablespoons (1 1/4sticks) cold unsalted butter
Ice water
1 1/2 cups marmalade
Candied Orange Peel, recipe follows
you'll need:
1 large navel orange
3/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips

step 1. Line a heavy large baking sheet with parchment paper.

step 2. Make candied orange peels first. See recipe below.

step 3. Mix the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, orange peel, and salt in a food processor. Add the butter. Blend until clumps form. Add 2 tablespoons of ice water and blend. Add more ice water, 1 tablespoon at a time, until the dough forms. I had to add about 1 1/2 additional tablespoons of water.

step 4. Turn the dough out onto a work surface and knead briefly to form a smooth dough. Gather the dough into a ball then divide the dough into 8 equal pieces. Flatten each piece into a disk.

step 5.
Press 1 dough piece on the prepared baking sheet into a 4 1/2-inch round. Spoon 1 generous tablespoon of the marmalade into the center of the round. Fold the dough border in to form a 3-inch round and allow the center of the crostata to remain uncovered. Pleat loosely and pinch the dough to seal any cracks. Repeat with the remaining dough pieces and marmalade, spacing the crostatas evenly apart.

step 6. Cover and refrigerate the crostatas until they are cold, at least 45 minutes and up to 4 hours.

step 7. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.

step 8. Bake the crostatas until the crusts are set, about 18 minutes. Cool for 10 minutes. Slide a metal spatula under the crusts to free the crostatas from the baking sheet. Garnish with the candied orange peel and serve warm. I also drizzled more of the melted chocolate on top.

Candied Orange Peel:

You boil the orange peel in water twice to remove the bitterness and soften the rinds so that it absorbs the simple sugar.

You'll need:
1 large navel orange
3/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips

step 1. Using a vegetable peeler, cut the orange part of the peel from the stem end of the orange down to the navel end, forming long 3/4 to 1-inch-wide strips.

step 2.
Bring two heavy small saucepan of water to a boil. Add the peels and cook for 1 minute in the first saucepan. Drain and then rinse the peels under cold water. Repeat cooking the peels in the second saucepan with fresh boiling water and rinsing under cold water.

step 3. Stir the sugar and 1/2 cup of fresh water in a heavy small saucepan over medium-high heat until the sugar dissolves. Bring to a boil. Add the orange peels and simmer over medium-low heat until tender, about 15 minutes. Keep an eye on it, making sure that it doesn't burn. Using tongs, transfer the peels to a sheet of parchment paper to dry slightly, about 1 hour.

step 4. Line a small baking sheet with parchment paper.

step 5. Now melt the chocolate using a "double broiler" method. Stir the chocolate in a small bowl set over a saucepan of simmering water until melted and smooth. Use a bowl that is slightly bigger than the saucepan so that it sits on top.

step 6. Dip 1 1/2-inches of each candied orange peel into the chocolate then place them on the prepared baking sheet and refrigerate until the chocolate is set, about 15 minutes.

Yesterday's mystery revealed

I went to see Martha!

Guest:
Joy Behar (Why: New book)
Crafts: Decoupage Halloween Face Masks and Glow in the dark Funkins
Cooking: Pastry Chef Pichet Ong
Audience Giveaways: A copy of The Sweet Spot Asian inspired Desserts, Joy Behar's When You Need a Lift and a $40 Funkins gift certificate

It was great! Second row! I had so much fun - my hands hurt from clapping and I think I got a headache from all the "woooooo-ing".

At first we weren't so excited about Joy, but she turned out to be a pretty funny guest. As for the queen of craft - she seemed a little disconnected from the audience. Off-camera she didn't really pay much attention to the audience (minus the Q&A segment). She claimed to be having a "bad day" and a cold so I'm not sure if it was just an off day or if the rumors about her are actually true. Since I'm a big fan - I'll give her the benefit of the doubt and will make a final assessment after I see one more taping!

Joey was the best - the man had so much energy, like 5 cans of Red Bull worth. For those of you who don't watch the show, Joey is in charge of getting the studio audience pumped up for the show. When you hear clapping, you can bet that Joey just signaled the audience to clap. Or if you hear "MMmmmmm" - that means Joey just rubbed his stomach, signaling the audience to MMmmmm. The guy seemed genuinely jolly and seemed to really enjoy his job. He was running around tossing freebies all hour long. Karen was lucky enough to get her hands on one of them. It was pretty funny, the lady next to her tried grabbing it from her and Joey saved the day and gave the lady a prize of her own. Although I think a cat fight over a Melita coffee filter pack would've made the Martha Stewart Show experience ten times more memorable.

I can't wait to go again - Karen hurry up and get some tickets!

Unfortunately my question wasn't chosen, but I guess I can always be picked to be the live caller one day! There was a stack of cookies in the waiting room!

It was pretty simple to get tickets, so if you're in town or plan to be in town go sign up for tickets.
